What the Heck is Steampunk?

Perhaps someone mentioned the word steampunk to you in passing or you were doing some online shopping and saw it. If you’re like me, you are naturally attracted to industrial items, gadgets, gizmos etc. but you never knew it had a name or a style associated to it. Guess what? You’re into steampunk baby. So what the heck is steampunk?

There are multiple definitions to choose from; here is my favorite   “a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction.” Typically, the historical elements refer to time periods in which steam-powered machinery was utilized rather than advanced technology. Suddenly the typical icon symbols seen when titled steampunk such as goggles, gears/widgets, leather clothing, gas masks, and utility belts makes sense!

Does this mean we are discussing just the time periods during the industrial revolution? Not necessarily… think of the adjective contemporary; Urban Homez defined it as a period “in the present”. Not to get too philosophical but if the present is always present, when is it not? Heck did you know swim goggles were first invented by Persian pearl divers in the 14th century? SAY WHAT?! Yep, soo know one really knows when steampunk officially became a a thing.

So what does the Steampunk genre include? Anything you can think of really; art, fashion, books, games, movies etc. It attempts to merge 19th century industrial steam powered machinery and modern technology to make aesthetically pleasing designs in anything. A lot of steam punk art aims to bring the 18th century America and 19th century British traditions to present a futuristic world that employs the use of steam power.

Now that you have a better idea of what the heck steampunk is, don’t be surprised that you will start recognizing elements of it everywhere!
